Dear Reader:
On a somber winter afternoon, ten years ago, two 50-year-old men were laid off from their jobs. Both rolled-over their company retirement accounts to Roth IRA. Both of them did it for the same reason. Neither of them wanted to pay taxes on their retirement accounts when they retire. They were very much alike, these two men.
Both had worked for the same Midwestern manufacturing company, both were personable and both – as hard-working men are – were filled with ambitious dreams for their retirements.
Recently, these men evaluated their retirement holdings.
They were still very much alike.
Both men had graduated from the same college. Both were happily married. Both had three children.
But there were two inter-related differences. When the two lost their jobs at the manufacturing company, one of the men was manager of a small department of that company. The other was its president. The president’s retirement portfolio was 10 times larger than the manager’s portfolio.
An avid read of Wall Street Journal, the president knew all about stocks and bonds, and chose to invest his Roth IRA dollars in a low-cost S&P 500 Index fund.
The manager, a street-smart type, didn’t care much about Wall Street. He rolled-over his account into a self-directed Roth IRA, and invested in various real estate investments, such as, multi-family properties, commercial properties, tax liens, land development, etc.
Today, at an age when they can withdraw from their tax-free retirement accounts, the president’s portfolio is 31% down. The manager’s portfolio is 20 times up.
What Made The Difference
Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes this kind of difference in people’s retirement portfolios? It isn’t always a native intelligence or talent or dedication. It isn’t that one person wants more money at retirement and the other doesn’t.
The difference lies in what each person knows and how he or she makes use of that knowledge.
To fill this knowledge gap,
I created the FREE report…
